Upgrade AWS EKS – Older Version to Latest Otherwise Pay 500% More
AWS launches extended support on older versions of EKS services
Customers can continue using older versions of Kubernetes for an extra year thanks to AWS’s recent announcement of extended support for Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) versions (beginning in April, 2024). Although this might seem like a convenient option, customers should carefully consider its price and several drawbacks before choosing it.
The Groots cloud team can assist you with mission-critical apps, risk-free upgrades, and time and money savings.
The cost of extended support will begin in April 2024.

How to pay the AWS EKS bill ?
Let’s assume that you create an Amazon EKS cluster on a Kubernetes version the day Amazon EKS releases it, and that you run the cluster for the next 26 months without upgrading the control plane version.
You will pay $0.10 per hour during the first 14 months when the version is in standard support.
After 14 months, the Kubernetes version transitioned to extended support. You will now pay $0.60 per hour for the remaining 12 months. During the 26-month period, on average, you will pay $0.33 per hour to run this cluster.
Support type | Usage (Months) | Price (per cluster per hour) |
Standard | 14 | $0.10 |
Extended | 12 | $0.60 |
Average cost for 26 months of support | $0.33 |
